LiDAR, GPS and optical tracking: how to compare them

Technology[Author or reviewer][Publication date] • [Reading time]

Three technologies dominate how elite sport measures movement. They look similar in a vendor demo and behave very differently on a match day.

[Draft copy to confirm] Wearable GPS estimates position from satellite signals. Optical systems read the pitch from cameras. LiDAR measures it directly with laser pulses. Each one answers a slightly different question, and each carries limits that matter when the data feeds a selection or a return-to-play decision.

What each technology observes

[Draft copy to confirm] GPS follows a worn device, so it only sees the athletes who carry one. Optical tracking sees every player in frame but depends on lighting and camera angles. LiDAR captures the full body shape in three dimensions, without a device on the athlete.

How to compare them

  • [Draft copy to confirm] Coverage: who is measured, and who is missed.
  • [Draft copy to confirm] Fast, multidirectional actions: how well turns and accelerations are captured.
  • [Draft copy to confirm] One standard: whether match and training data can be compared directly.

Those decisions are only as good as the movement data behind them.

Conclusion

[Draft copy to confirm] No single technology wins on every measure. The useful question is which one measures the actions that matter to your sport, to one standard, wherever athletes train and play.
